Alanis Morissette released her album Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie three years after the groundbreaking Jagged Little Pill. And though I bought the album and liked the songs well enough, it didn’t quite hit me like Jagged Little Pill did. So I missed out on the beauty of “That I Would Be Good” the first time. I only realized how beautiful it was when I started listening to Alanis again. Maybe it’s also the timing – I’m a firm believer that the universe sends you what you need when you need it most, and this song is something I definitely need right now. I need to remind myself (or I need Alanis to remind me) that I am enough, no matter what the world says. Just read these beautiful lyrics and you will see why this song resonates for so many people even after 23 years.

And it probably will for a long time.

That I would be good even if I did nothing
That I would be good even if I got the thumbs down
That I would be good if I got and stayed sick
That I would be good even if I gained ten pounds
That I would be fine even if I went bankrupt
That I would be good if I lost my hair and my youth
That I would be great if I was no longer queen
That I would be grand if I was not all knowing

That I would be loved even when I numb myself
That I would be good even when I am overwhelmed
That I would be loved even when I was fuming
That I would be good even if I was clingy

That I would be good even if I lost sanity
That I would be good whether with or without you

I, I would
