My music obsession of the week is James Bay’s Let It Go. Don’t worry, it’s not a Frozen cover. What it is is a soulful, haunting, heartfelt track. I usually steer clear of songs like this because they make me want to curl up in a ball and die. But James Bay draws you in subtly and leaves you spellbound for a full four minutes and twenty seconds. His almost tentative guitar strumming conveys all the pain, yet his voice still leaves room for hope after the heartbreak. He had me at that “I’ll be me” line. I don’t know what it is about those three notes, but the way he sang the line just got me. The music sounds the way Coldplay would if they were genuine, and his voice reminds me a little of James Morrison.
Everything that’s broke
Leave it to the breeze
Why don’t you be you
And I’ll be meI used to recognize myself
It’s funny how reflections change
And we’re becomin’ somethin’ else
I think it’s time to walk away
